Can anyone help ID this orchid?

I inherited this orchid from a friend who relocated back to the UK from Malaysia and I don't want it to die lol! I'm a complete novice when it comes to plants, particularly orchids

all she could tell me was that it had purple flowers and she watered it when she remembered!

I've done some googling but there are so many species I don't even know where to start

can anyone help please?

Looks like a dendrobium to me :)

It is a dendrobium. One that is normally called a phal type rather than a nobile type.

It produces its flowers on a spike from near the top of the canes. If you look you can see the remains of one right at the top looking like a bit of dried up twig.

Yup. Dendrobium. Looks like it could use a bit more frequent watering.
