What is a Blc Hawaiian Passion Carmela Orchid?
I bought an orchid that looks exactly like this:
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...n-carmela.html And the tag says Blc Hawaiian Passion Carmela just like the one in that link. What species of Orchid is this and any tips on how to care for this? Thank you very much! |
that is an inter-generic hybrid of Brassavola, Laelia, and Cattleya - tho there may be a new "genus" name for this hybrid ...
Culture as for Cattleya ... bright light (avoid mid-day sun, at least in summer), water when media is near-dry |
oh cool, thanks. This one is beautiful. Would a Phal mix (Better-Gro from Lowes) be OK to use for this or would I be better off ordering a Cattleya specific mix?
|
I'm not familiar with that specific product - if it's pretty chunky it may be good to use ...
I have a bark mix (Guebler's medium) I have used for both Phals and Catts ... tho it doesn't contain the 'peat chunks' I see as an ingredient in the Better-gro Phal mix, so idk ... - hopefully someone familiar with that product can chime in. |
Thanks for the info.
I can also pick and choose the bark and charcoal and perlite from the Better-Gro mix for chunkier pieces. And avoid the peat moss. I can also reuse some of the rocks that is currently used, I suppose. Just trying to get away from having to order more stuff online since I just spent too much on supplies already. :D |
You should definitely not re-use bark. It's fine to re-use rocks, pots, etc as long as these can be scrubbed and sterilized.
I put plastic and clay pots in the dishwasher; clay pots and rocks in the oven (250 degrees for about an hour) |
If you want the correct name here it is.
Rlc. Hawaiian Passion 'Carmela' It's parents are C. Wailea x Rlc. Waikiki Gold. Warren |
