New purpuratas from SBOE!!

I just bought these three divisions from SBOE.

Starting from the one in bud: Laelia purpurata 'San Bar Venosa'; Laelia purpurata russeliana, and the third one is Laelia purpurata var. carnea:

I'm excited!! This is my first real big venture into purpuratas. I hope they like me as much as their cousins the anceps do!!!

Here's the picture, peeps!!

Wish me luck!!:bowing:bowing:bowing

I got a L purpurata carnea from oakhill for $ 3.33 at the Jersey shore orchid show...
I hope I see it bloom before retirement age. but looks healthy!
congrats for those. They look tall and plump... Probably it is cheaper to fly to Brazil and see them in the natural habitat than buy them from SBOE!

Thanks guys! I'm excited to be trying something new!!!

I don't expect great things from the buds as they were probably stressed during shipping, but I hope it will recover nicely and bloom for me next year.

What drew you to this species?

Ummmm....well, to answer your question, I love Laelias generally. I don't like super-floof or orchids with too many color combinations--to me they look like "too much of a good thing."

I love L. anceps because the blooms have very clean lines and the colors are beautiful.

I started noticing L. purpuratas because they offer a little bit of floof, but still have clean lines. And, of course the colors are incredibly dramatic--but it's never a sherbert-colored thing. It's as if someone dipped the flower in paint but left the rest of the bloom intact.

I figured I would give the purpuratas a try to see how it goes. If it goes well, I plan on expanding my collection. :) :)

Have you thought about a L tenebrosa?

Yeah, I have....and for some reason they just don't do it for me. Weird, no?

I don't know whether it's the color or what, but I've never really been excited about them.

Hmmm..
