Aerangis: ID needed - riddle solved: ellisii
3 Attachment(s)
On my last walk to the greenhouse, before getting everything ready to go to Portland, OR for 10 days very early tomorrow I discovered that this Aerangis labelled fastuosa, started flowering. I know for a while that it wasn't fastuosa as the plant is far too big.
My guess was either A modesta or articulata. The plant has leaves fleshy Phalaenopsis like leaves of 7-8" long and 2" wide of a light green colour. The spur is a whopping 11" long and the flowers about 1.5" in diameter. Before I saw the flowers, my guess would have been modesta, but now I am not sure it is either modesta or articulata, as the shape and arrangement of petals is quite different. It could of course be that the flowers will look different in a few days. Was wondering whether any of you had any ideas Lars P.S.: Had to post now as I will be away |
Having double checked my Angreaecum book, I am quite certain now it is Aerangis ellisii

Congratulations on the flowers and the ID.
And those are wonderful flowers, love the colour hints around the tips! Looks quite peachy on my screen. |
Very nice aerangis. You are correct - this is absolutely not articulata or modesta. Aer. ellisii sounds about right, but another possability is Aer. spiculata. Do you have a shot of the entire plant?

What a beauty!!! I want one. hehe

Agreed on ellisi over spiculata. The lip on spiculata is reflexed opposed to the more deflexed lip of cyrptodon or ellisi, cryptodon has the "teeth" coming off the viscidium though right?
