Growing Neo's in the Sub-Tropics
 

Hi All,

I will be relocating back to the Subtropical coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. I will be taking my small collection of Neo's back with me. I did initially start off with Neo falcata from Korea when I was still staying in Kwa-Zulu Natal and it did pretty well, considering some of the heatwaves that we experienced, With temps regulary going over 40°C (104°F) in January and February. This also happens to be the time of the year that they flower for me. My Question is, how hardy are the fuukiran varieties to heat like this. I would hate to part with my collection and I would hate to lose any to the heat as well!!

From what I've read and have been told, the heat usually ok with them as long as the area is shaded. Also, decent humidity is helpful. If you don't have at least 50% then you'll want to be on top of the watering. They can only withstand that kind of heat if the roots are well hydrated. Good luck on your move!

Tracy's right. 40°C is nothing to worry about, as long as you keep them well hydrated. If you start getting temperatures above 46°C (115°F) for long periods, then you'll probably see some damage.

Thanks for the advice, it has put my mind at ease! Fortunately, humidity is not a problem, average humidity is about 60%, It is only on a one or two days a year where the temps go above 45°C. Do you think one should still carry on growing them in moss or should I switch to a bark mix??

Craig, guess I would be more inclined to keep them in the moss mound if it gets that warm but it's really up to you. I think, if you choose to go with bark mix, expect to be watering more often, perhaps. If you are worried about root rot with the moss, you can stick something in the middle of the mound to maintain a cavity. I think what you might have to worry about the most, is making sure they do not receive high light when the temps get as warm as you mentioned. Just remember, the warmer it gets, the more water and air circulation they need, especially if you have active root tips.
