Growing in a Greenhouse Window?
I was reading a book last night that extolled the virtues of growing orchids in a greenhouse window. It recommended that the window have a south/east, or south/west orientation. It recommended a shade cloth on the inside of the window during the summer months to keep the plants from frying. I'm curious if anyone here is growing in a greenhouse window, and if so if it's working for you. Thanks!

my grandma had a green house window, if that's what we would call it. It was back when I was young. She managed to rebloom the dend we gifted her. Dends are so frustrating and we never rebloomed ours. That was her only orchid too

I grow in a similar situation - a home designed and built box bay window similar to a greenhouse window. See the following pics:
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...57/DSC1945.jpg Inside http://www.orchidboard.com/community...w_Area_Out.jpg Outside Mine faces due south, but the little 'wing walls' help shade harsh sun. I think the little commercial ones designed to go in a standard window might be fine, but too small in most cases. |
One other thought - depending on the latitude one lives at, shade cloth might not be necessary. If I were in sunny Florida or California, then yes. But at 45 degrees latitude, the sun is never that strong. I leave the window screens in the windows over winter to cut back the direct rays from lower elevation sun which shines directly into window all day (on days the sun shines) but in summer the sun is too high in the sky to shine directly into windows.

I did grow in the house in the garage we converted to a bird / plant area ,feathers and plants don't look good together:biggrin: the first picture is from the outside the windows are where the garage door was they face north east , east and south east but not direct south . I used venetian blinds to adjust the light ,the plants did fine in there , even the Vandas . Gin

Gin, the bay window in my master bedroom has a similar configuration as yours, only mine faces southeast, south, and southwest. There are blinds on the windows so I could control light, but it is the warmest room in the house. Wonder if I could talk my husband into one of those heavy wire garage shelving units to put in there??:hmm
