well, according to my reading it's easiery than the similar dendrobium tobaense. tobaense has an even wilder more impressive flower. but is apparently harder to tend.

aaaaaand. i think i saw mention of some crosses of tobaense & cruentum. making a weirder flower and better growing.

i suspect it's mighty hot dwn there.

Didn't know you were on OB (we met on flickr, alias xmpraedicta). I have 3 tobaenses and the primary hybrid with cruentum (Dend. Peng Seng). I find them both to really despise dry hot conditions - responding by dropping leaves and sulking terribly. Warm, humid and bright seems to be the way to go, which is not the easiest thing to muster up when living in the north like us. These guys seem slightly tricky to grow, which I find irritatingly surprising since most other dendrobiums I like are more forgiving. :)

I recently got dendrobium suzukii, and there is considerable confusion as to whether it is a valid species, or a hybrid of cruentum and something else. The ID of your plant is also questionable, although I don't have the expertise to properly identify it. However, there is excellent discussion with photos here.

The four plants in this group are very attractive: Dend suzukii, dend cruentum, dend tobaense and dend ayubii, of which the last is incredibly rare and still unavailable in North America at least. Glad to see others interested in the nigrohirsute species!

these nigrohirsutes are interesting. the flowers are wowza no matter which one it is. and i like the look o the little plants.

these seem likely to spend their lives in an old 29g fishtank i have with one side broken out so it doesnt hold water anymore. but it's steelframe slatebottom oldie so, now it's a home for orchids. the tank holds the clip lams well. i keep my den laevifolium pretty convincingly red so i figure i'm on the right track.

i didnt really come across denial of suzuki as a species. just questionability across the board at identifying these things as they'd been so overcrossed.

this seeeeeeems to be in the realm of possibility for suzuki. i actually askt the guy as we discussed over book pictures whether it ws cruentum. the confusion is fun.

i'll keep my eyes peeled for ayubii...

wow, how I love the contrast of the red on the lip to the rest of the flower.. wether its a cruentum, suzukii, or a hybrid of some sort its still amazing
oh and if you don't mind me asking, where did you get it? they are such a pain to find >_<

One of my favorite Dendrobium. Unfortunately, this specie becomes very difficult to see in nature now.
