Prostheca cochleata ... the octopus flower

Formerly Enc cochleata. My guess is I didn't give it enough water. The spike is all twisted down in the sheath. Didn't bother trying to free it. IME usually just wind up snapping the spike off when I do that. Flower is kinda cool though -- I like the spotting on the column

Fantastic bloom Paul, too bad about the spike. I'm not familiar with Prostheca. Is there only one spike?

Beautiful one. I love that dark lip and shape! The plant gets to be quite big though so I didn't get one

Nice, it looks really cool, kinda sinister! I love it!

It really looks like octopus! Thanks for sharing!

This is beautiful!! One of my favorite orchids to grow :D
Paul, what's the scent like??

Only 1 spike but many flowers can come from that, can be a real show.

Helen click on my camera, I do have 2 photo's that will give you a better idea on how the flowers look then trying to explain it.
Need to really work on that that gallery soon

As Gloria mentioned, only one spike. Not really worried about size -- if it gets too big I'll trade it away. [Presently the plant is only 6-8 inches (15-20cm) tall.] In the mean time, I'll enjoy it.

Oh, Gloria, I noticed you have two similar looking flowers in you album -- one being Prostheca cochleatum and the other Anacheilium cochleatum. Are they actually two different species or have they simply rename the lil bugger AGAIN?

Helen 04-29-2007 09:18 PM

Gloria, your cochleata are terrific. Thanks for letting me know about your photos. Very unique blooms.

Paul, I believe it was renamed again

Here's mine, was a gift from boyfriend and has been in bloom for the last month with more buds to open. I've read these can stay in bloom for months. I noticed a sweet scent as well, not very strong but it's definitely there especially on sunny days.

Thanks Helen, glad you like them :)
LOL yep Paul can you believe another rename, wonder how long again before they move it :hmm
Very pretty flower Elena, nice shot too. I have 2 - 1 that's smells bad and the other that smells like sweet honey, such a wonderful scent.
Many 'chid hobbyists keeping these orchids would consider them everbloomers. I would agree, since they are in bloom more then not.
