Lyc. cochleata

Here are a few pictures of a new one, just purchased this weekend. The smell is out of this world. This is my first Lycaste and I'm almost finding myself hoping that I don't do well with it...so that I don't get the urge to purchase more:rofl:! Is it possible to have an addiction within an addiction?

Very lovely!

Just one addiction within an addiction? Surely you jest!

Very nice purchase! The blooms are stunning. What do you think it smells like? Another very nice Lycaste that you really MUST get is Lycaste aromatica. It smells intensely of cinnamon. The blooms are yellow with some orange on the lip/throat, and the spikes stay very short.
If all Lycastes are the same, they are quite easy to grow. The one thing to be careful about (at least it's the case with aromatica) is to not get any water on/in the new growths, they rot easily and quickly. |
Looking good Brenda! :cheer:

Thank you for the nice comments and tips. Camille, I am horrible at describing colors and smell...but I would say it is a very sweet, musky smell. Having company tonight and I will see if they can describe better. I will put aromatica on my wish list. Ronald, thank you for making me feel somewhat normal.

So many blooms!!
I've been recently bitten by the lycaste bug too. Their flowers are so pretty and most of the time their fragrances are really wonderful! :D |
Oh wow! I can see becoming addicted to these! gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Whats a general temperature range for them, and how big ?
thanks |
White Rabbit, Owiz recommends temps 82 summer days average 66-67 night, winter days 77-81 and nights 58-60. Rest period in winter, water greatly reduced. As for size, I'm not too sure, the one I have just purchased is in a 5 inch pot, has 5 large pseud. bulbs and a new growth with leaves where most of the flowers are coming from. From the look of the pseudo bulbs, I would imagine some Lycastes could get quite large, I will let those with more knowledge on this speak to it. Don't know much about them, was a rather impulsive buy, but I wanted it.

Really like the look of that. Great colour.
