Have I got this right? Re: naming question
Wondering if I have this orchid naming business correct.
For instance. I have a Potinara Red Crab 'Uncle Wang'. The Potinara is the Genus, the Red Crab is the hybrid name and the 'uncle wang' is the clone name of a specific special clone of Red Crab. (correct?) Question #1: I am assuming my 'uncle wang' was either a division or mericlone or whatever so that it is identical to the original Red Crab. Question #2: if this orchid received an award, is the award for the Red Crab? or Red Crab 'uncle wang'? (I'm assuming it was for Red Crab and not 'uncle wang') This is where confusion comes in. Question #3: if it won an award, should my 'uncle wang' have the award abbrev. on the tag also? Seeing it was probably a division/mericlone? I hope someone can help clarify this for me. Thanks! :scratchhead: |
Red Crabs! OMG
I don't think Uncle Wang is going to receive any awards for his red crabs! :scratchhead:
:hmm He might want to try some RID!  :coverlaugh: Dorothy

Thanks for the chuckle Dorothy...

Hehehe
I couldn't help myself! :blushing:
You set it up so nicely! Glad it brought a laugh! Dorothy:D |
I think the award is for the special clone (in your case, specific for 'Uncle Wang' clone). If you bought a mericlone or division, so you have a awarded clone, congrats! If you bought a seedling, originated of selfing Pot. Red Crab 'Uncle Wang', you have only a 'generic' orchid named Pot Red Crab, non-awardble.
Than, if you bought a division/mericlone from a reliable nursery and aren't any award indication in the tag, this clone ('Uncle Wang') do not received any award |
Mine was a bare root from Florida that a vendor sold me after he potted it. The vendor was at an orchid show.
Bottom line, if it doesn't have the awards showing on the tag, then it was not a division? THis is where I get confused. Clones/divisions...still, wouldn't it still be from the original plant? More clarification required please. |
Yup you have it all right there! and the award will be added only to the 'Uncle Wang' clone. And it will written at the very end of all the names :)

wtg 'Uncle Wang'

Fren, I still need clarification. Because the vendor brought it in from Florida and potted it, and he printed the tag, Pot. Red Crab 'Uncle Wang'. This means my particular plant does not have the awarded status, right? Otherwise it would have been written on the tag?
Q#2, is it clear to anyone (other than me) if this is a division? or a clone? or is that info lost out there somewhere? How many 'uncle wang's' can be out there? unless they were divided? this is another area where I'm confused. Perhaps someone can lead me to a site where there is more 'detailed' info on this whole area. I don't seem to be getting my questions across clearly. Thanks |
Helen, this discussion talks about hybrid crosses vs mericlones vs divisions. It may answer your question.
