Thunia bensoniae (May 2010)
Hi everyone
Here are pics from a Thunia bensoniae I bloomed this season. I just collected seed from from another plant and sent it to the seedbank at Terrorchid - Terrestrial Orchid Forum, Gallery & Wiki - Dedicated to the culture and care of terrestrial Orchids This species likes a cooler summer than T. alba or marshalliana. I keep mine at 25c, but they can take a bit higher. Gorgeous colour. I've not heard of Thunia before but it's a pretty one.

It seems to be rarer than the other Thunias. I have sent seed to the Troy Meyers Lab this week, so hopefully in the near future there will be flasks available through him. Flask and Established Seedling Sales, and Flasking Programs

Here are the plant habit pics. This particular plant has 18 inch or 45cm tall canes. This is staked as the plants will droop otherwise.
You can see a few plantlets that have started around the base of the plant as well and they will produce keikis. Old canes can be cut into lengths and put in moss or sand to produce keikis too. Very nice!
Thunias seem to like cool night temperature. They do not bloom well here. |
Very pretty colour.
