My Orchid Walls
People have been posting such neato projects lately that I thought I'd share mine with you all.
I started them about 6 months ago because I was tripping over many of the smaller seedlings or knocking plants over on the floor. I figured I needed to make some space, and then I got this idea...Why not make mobile walls? So I got this silly idea I wanted them suspended from the ceiling, so that when I filled up one, I just make another. Sorta like hanging canvas from the ceiling. Anyway I went to home depot and bought a couple prefabed shower panels. The type of thing that you use when your making the back wall waterproof. Some screws and a good deal of chain. Also some hooks for the ceiling. I built a wood frame around the back of the shower panel so it was sturdy like mounted canvas. Then screwed in the bolts and the chains on the top. It's then looked like this (excuse the working mess) :blushing: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...rchidwall2.jpg Then glued moss all over the front and then stapled a thin netting from top to bottom to make sure the moss stays. Then it looked like this http://www.orchidboard.com/community...rchidwall1.jpg Then I hung it up and started putting my plants on it! It's really freed up a lot of space in my green room! I can either mount directly into the moss on the board and the roots grow into it, or I can just hang my mounts from it too. Heres a photo of one nearly full. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...rchidwall3.jpg So far I've only made two but they have worked pretty well thus far! The best part is they are very mobile. If they need to go outside for some reason, we just unhook them from the ceiling and carry them outside. They also lay perfectly flat so they can be placed in the back of a truck. (As you can tell im ploting for my vacation) lol |
WoW DJ, very cool idea, Looks great too! You must have gone thru alot of moss

WOW! So much space! But you have only one lamp. It looks like plants at the bottom doesn't receive enough light.

WoW!! Nice one. What if you used tree fern panel, much thicker substrate for your orchids. Plus I feel that you have plenty more room for at least another 50 orchids :D
Thats just me though. I know lots of people don't like to crowd their orchids. How do you water them? Is it done automatically? Or you just hose them? |
:D now that is something what will look very cool! I think you have much more room on there for more orchids ;)

How would something like this work with Cocoa-fiber mat? Just curious.
