Very nice! Is this the male or female flowers? I'm having trouble determining if there are boy or girl parts on this one!

kavanaru 05-05-2010 04:17 PM

Steve, those are male flowers...

a quite general but easy rule (not always 100% accurate though, but applicable to all "hooded" Catasetum) is to look at the position of the petals..

Female planiceps:

Male planiceps:

then, of course more accurate, is to look at the "trigger hairs" in the male flowers, but absent in the female ones...

Oh I see. I had trouble finding the trigger hairs in original pics, but now I see they are waaay in the back of the flower (in the 2nd pic). I'm also not familiar with the hooded Catasetums, so now I know what to look for (petals). Thanks!

Thanks for information, kavanaru. Look your pics very professional and your collection of very massive Catasetum species, admires.
