Where to put my plants on outdoor table
I have a plant table approx. 4'x20' where I put my orchid plants in the summer after taking them out of the GH. It is oriented roughly north/south. One part gets direct sun in the AM another part in the PM. A large number of my plants need high light-Catts, Brassavola, Laelia, etc.
My question is: Would the plants be better off receiving morning sun or afternoon sun or doesn't it really matter. I have no real control over this due to the large trees in my yard so all I can do is situate the plants in the optimum place. I know that the sun's pattern changes as the year progresses so there will probably be changes in the amount of sun/shade on the table. Last year I had problems with sunburn due to Hurricane Ike's depredations but this year the trees have put out a lot of growth so I am a bit in the dark right now. (Or should I say, in the light). Thanks for any advice. Beverly A. |
depens on the time of day that its direct sun for sure morning untill about 10:30 is fine for catts.
I also let mine have direct after 6 pm with no problem ....other typs I cant say really I keep all of my phals and dens under a cypress tree outside and they get no direct sun all summer |
For the most part, I've heard it recommended that the earlier light is better- the afternoon full sun is very strong, especially in the summer, and can burn some plants that are not used to it.

Beverly,
I'm only a couple hours north of you. You and I both know how brutal the Texas sun can be (everything really is bigger in TX). I would opt for morning sun as well. Much of my collection gets put outdoors too. They normally get full sun for several hours in the morning, but then heavy shade during the really hot part of the day. |
