That mount,#3, is awesome again. But of course vandas are still my favorites. What is that first one?

Thanks. That first one is one of my favorites too. I love the color and tessalation. The blooms seem to have personality. Three years ago it was a mark down at Walmart because the bloom was spent. It had a tag but I lost the darned thing. Pretty sure it was an Ascocenda. It took a while for this plant to recover from Walmart's care but it's growing well now and usually blooms 4 times a year...sometimes 2 spikes at a time. It has a 1 1/2 year old keiki attached to it's base and it's producing a spike too.:)

I love the first two. The third is a wonderful mounting job.

Thank you. For an established mount I generally water once a day, sometimes twice when it's really hot and dry. My new mounts get watered at least twice a day

A word of caution if you've never mounted Phals....Be mentally prepared to loose a few leaves while the plant is adjusting. I've found that the whole process is much easier and the plant adjusts better if it has lots of aerial roots to begin with.

The Phal in the photo was an emergency mount because the weight of its leaves had caused it to spill from it's pot. Last April the mishap broke her spike and all the roots were damaged or broken. To make matters worse, the roots that were left were not aerial. She looked great when she was freshly mounted. To compensate for the root loss I watered her 3 times a day, but that still wasn't enough. Over the next 2 or 3 months she lost 6 of her oldest leaves. It was sad to see this happen but I was encouraged when she began putting out fresh roots. This began happening a few weeks after being mounted. Gradually she developed a new healthy root system and all the old roots died.

:thankyou for the info! I have mentally prepared myself for the worst since this will be my first phal mount. I have some noids that only cost me $2 each since they no longer had flowers. Plus they were in moss so the roots aren't doing so great. So since it's going to need to grow new roots anyway it might as well do it on a mount! Hope it works! :crossfing

You're very welcome.

IMO bargain priced noids and bare root chids can be great learning tools for the inexperienced or experimental grower. With the exception of a few gifted plants, and one pricey (doomed) purchase, all of my beginner victims were clearanced or bare root specimens. Cost effective purchases are way to learn the craft of growing orchids. In the beginning I found the knowledge from most Orchid books to be contradicting and unsatisfactory and it was a Godsend to stumble across the Orchid Board site.

Good luck with your mounting projects. :)
