New Cutie! (Drosera/sundew NOID)
 

Decided to just make a new thread since I have lots of pictures.

Got this little one yesterday- I'm totally in love! :cloud9:

I can definitely see myself getting more of these- at least a bonafide Drosera capensis. Planning on getting one from a good ebay vendor I found, or if anybody has divisions on here that they have for sale.


As stated in my other thread- it came in sphagnum moss. After poking around a little bit, it looks like it was originally in peat, and was packed in the moss for shipping.

Questions:
1. All I have readily available for media is long fiber sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark, and steer manure :lol:.
-I can easily get some gravel and sand, straight peat with no additives is going to be hard to come by.

2. Since my environment is dry, will this little one do better is sphag anyways? I've read that they prefer peat:sand, but I'm up for other ideas.

3. I've heard everything from "does fine in a dish outside of a terrarium" to "oh my gosh it must be in a terrarium or it'll hate life and die". Um....?

4. Do you think this is a species, or hybrid? From a modest search, I think I agree with a previous post that it might be Drosera capensis. (I REALLY hope it is, but if not, I love it anyways)

5. Most important: does it look like it's in good shape, nice and healthy? I tried to find the one that was the least battered, and had the most dew (heard that they go 'dry' when under stress, or sick), and was a decent size.


I happened to have a plastic liner that the pot fits in, and it's hanging out in that with a small reservoir of Distilled Water until I figure out something permanent- or that could be it's permanent home.

Your plant looks well. :) I would have to say it doesnt quite look like mine - I have D. capensis "Alba".

mine is potted in 3:1 sand/sphagnum, this being the mix recommended by the grower.

it lives in part sun outside, facing north (your equivalent of facing south). The main issue is NEVER let it get dry - it will keel over and die.

Try looking up Triffid Park australia on Google. They are a specialist carnivorous plant grower here and have some excellent care info on their site.

Anybody think this could be Drosera adelae, since it has tentacles all the way down the leaf, unlike D. capensis?

I can't help with the ID. This guy will need some really good pure water, and NO fertilzer. As already stated, never let it dry. Make sure it gets good light as well.
