Orchids, Bees and Deception! BBC News Link
Well I came home from work last night, and Hubby (Bless him, he's good to me) had been reading the BBC news website when his eye caught and Article About Orchids. So he told me and I read it this morning.
I hope you guys find it as interesting as I do. Here's the Link For those who wish to read it. BBC News - More light shed on orchids that deceive bees I would love to know more if any one knows something about this already? |
OK, that was way cool! New species via hybridization. However, it would take more than just a few hybrids to comprise a new species. Somehow this hybrid would have to achieve reproductive isolation from both parent species, and the ability to only reproduce with others of its kind. The orchid in the article seems to have begun to achieve this feat and that's why its so interesting. Thanks for the article!!! I love the BBC! Here is a little something I wrote about it in a very similar article, hope it helps. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...deception.html |
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Cheers For the link Tindomul! :D
Fascinating read! Funny thing is I didn't search this whole Site thoroughly enough before posting, and RosieC had already posted the link in the Orchid Lounge  Never mind. I'm really keen to keep an eye on this though. It would be wonderful to think that in our lifetime we could see a new Species of Orchid in it's infancy rather than have it found already established. Might happen, or we may be dead and gone before it does. Either way it's just fascinating! Like you say Tropicgirl, it is just Awesome! |
That was an intriguing story--although I do feel something of a soft spot for those poor duped male bees.

If you haven't already make sure you follow Tindomul's link as on page 2 there is another vid with Wasps being duped.
You do feel a little sorry for them true, but it's also highly amusing. Amazing the Deceptive Abilities you find in Nature! |
Loved both links thanks for posting them Triffid and Tin.
