Laelia purpurata sunburns?

I've got this Laelia purpurata for 3 days and I think I've allready made a mistake.

I've just notice some brown spots on 3 leaves from 5. On Sunday I let some plants in partial sun, on my balcony, and watch them closely (I usually keep my catts inside). This is the only one with these simptoms.

Are they sunburns?

Can I treat them somehow?

Am I going to loose the leaves? :( :(

Sorry, but is my first experience of this kind with a laelia. I can't tell you how worried I am and how guilty I feel.... :(

It does not look like sunburn. I am not quite sure what that is.

Not sure either, but it's not sunburn.

Did it come this way?

Laelia purpurata can actually handle quite a bit of indirect sunlight.

No, it didn't come this way. It was fine until yesterday...

I'm thinking this over, and it reminds me of a problem with a Pleurothallis condorensis I just ordered from South America not too long ago.

These streaks just show up randomly and they spread rapidly. Eventually it killed the plant.

I'm making a wild guess here, but I think it might be either bacterial or viral. The plant probably acquired this ailment from the damage it received during packing and shipping.

Fungus normally doesn't create streaks like that.

Fungal infections are usually spotty.

Whas the plant wet when it was put on the balcony?

Nico 04-07-2010 02:43 AM

Now I'm scared  Can a virus or bacteria spread so fast? I am so confused: Monday it was completely fine and now so bad... :(

I don't think I put it wet on my balcony, but the plant(s) traveled for 10 days confined in a box, with no air and a little bit of mold inside the package, but not in the media. I tried to give all the plants some air circulation after such a long journey.

But if it is virus I don't have any test kit here and no options... :(

Thank you very much for your help!

I want to make it clear...

I'm not 100% sure what it is. I was just reminded of a recent problem I had with one of my plants.

As far as viral test kits, here's a link.

I'm not sure what to do with bacterial infections. They're so tricky to cure.

I'd keep a close eye on it and see if it gets worse or not.

Of course, I agree with you. You can't be sure of anything until a test. I know. I really appreciate your answer, and I think is better to be aware of all the risks, even they are sometimes so hard to accept.

I'll keep a close eye on it and see what happens. Until now, no change...

Thank you for the link!
