Phal. cornu-cervi
 

Hey..everyone:waving i'm a newbie in this forum..i start planting orchid since March 2009..hope can learn from all of you here:bowing and in this post..i will post up my just blooming Phal. cornu-cervi..i bought it at July 2009..after 8 months waiting...finally it bloom last week..and another flower is blooming today...any suggestions to make this species grow healthier and prettier?? :blushing:

thanks Terri and jkofferdahl...i still learning in this field...i got a lot of orchids in my garden and most of them are phalaenopsis...now my Phal. violacea, Phal. violacea var. coerulea, Dtps. Purple Martin, and some hybrids phalaenopsis growing their spikes already...and Phal. violacea and Phal. violacea var. coerulea will blooming soon...will post up the photo once they bloom...anyway...can you all tell me more about how to take care of species and hybrids phal? got any differences between the way we take care of them? now is rainy season in malaysia..what should i more concern about? anything need to becareful?

p/s: did you all notice my avatar photo? the Phal. bellina...it bloomed last year at May..love it so much^^

Alvin, you don't need to worry much about the conditions of care between species and hybrids, though species do tend to be a bit more tolerant of variations than are species. I grow the hybrids I have in with my species collection without trouble. Phals like what I'd describe as bright shade, meaning no direct light. Since it's rainy season there, take care that water doesn't collect in the plant's crown.

thanks^^ i will becareful about the watering part..besides that..i got part of my orchids (around 5 to 7 pots) appear black shadows on their leaves...i ask my local friends here they said it is virus..and will affect other healthy orchids...i already seperate them and apply the toxic which could kill the virus...is that useful? or what can i do to cure my orchids? quite worry about them because this is the 1st time i met this problem since i start to plant orchids...:(

The problem could be caused by a lot of issues, and not just virus. So I would be careful about leaping to the conclusion that they are infected. If you can post good, clear photos of the suspected leaves, a number of folks here will respond. You can also purchase viral test kits for orchids.

If the plants do have a virus, however, you'll not want to simply separate them but actually destroy them. Viruses can spread from plant to plant, and will likely infect your other orchids, even if kept apart from the originally infected plant. There isn't a cure for viruses which infect orchids.

erm...can i ask...what is the test kits? i dont think malaysia will have such a things...and...you mean destroy the plants? is that the only way? :(

hey~here is the photoes of the leaves of my oncidium and phalaenopsis...these photoes i just took one hour ago...can anyone tell me what is the causes of this? and what can i do for it? help me...i got quite lot of orchids and very worry about others will be infected:(

p/s: because these spots just appear in this morning...so the color not that dark...few days ago when it happened..it became dark brown color and even black color...and i cut off those leave already...
and the mud color spots all over the leaves is some medicine i buy from the flowerbed which they said it could help...

There is physical damage of some sort, yes, but I really doubt that it is viral.
