Best greenhouse floor material
 

I am building a 14 x 24 greenhouse that will be a lean to attachment on the back of a garage.

I originally planned on pouring a concrete floor with pex tubing poured into the floor for heating purposes.

I have since learned that some feel that gravel - pea sized or larger -would be a better choice than concrete because the greater surface area of the gravel will help with raising humidity levels in the greenhouse.

However I see lots of problems with a gravel floor - maintenance, varmits, etc .

Any advice on the pros or cons of concrete or gravel floors would be greatly appreciated.

I have gravel and pavers in my greenhouse. Puting down some heavy hardware cloth to keep the critters out helps then gravel on top of that.

My orchid room is floored with large (egg size) river rock. I love it :)

Make a mess, throw down a bucket of water or hit it with the hose and poof! Good as new! :)

Certain critters are good...what in particular are you trying to avoid?

I have grass in mine

I have poured concrete and have no trouble keeping humidity...but I have a fogger ;)

Love the ease of cleaning up!

If you are in the green house all day gravel is a pain to walk in and concrete is a pain to stand on.

I have rubber clogs :biggrin:
They are "springy" and cool with air holes and I LOVE them!
....they are also pale purple :blushing:

I bought them 20 years ago when I was a surgery intern and had to stand in the OR all day with cases. Got them in one of those catalogues that sold "comfy" hospital gear.
Now they have been retired to the garden.

The only thing I can't comfortably stand or walk on with them is water :rofl:

I have a slate tile floor over a concrete base, with drains along one side. I love it - it's easy to clean and looks great.

that slate looks beautiful.....i have gravel, and i like it fine but i have to rake it back into my ;path, i could use some pavers, and the clover weed is awful....i am thinking of using some roundup on it this summer....any feedback on that idea?

Roundup should be fine so long as you don't get a drop of it on any of the plants you are growing. Once it runs into the soil, it breaks down into harmless components is what we were told in horticulture classes. Make sure you wear protection on hands and if you walk where you sprayed you could kill grass or anything you walk on with wet feet. I have heard of someone having foot print shaped dead spots on their lawn!
