Try Oak Hill Gardens. They give you wholesale price if you buy 5 or more. Carter and Holmes has similar deals and have trays and bare-root "dugups" for cheap. Exotic Orchids of Maui sells plug trays as well (I think).

Real wholesale requires the buyer to have a wholesale license and a tax number so that the seller does not have to pay sales tax on the purchase. Otherwise it's just a volume discount which is being called wholesale I think.

That would be an accurate statement :)

Costco, Trader Joe's, Lowes, Home Depot sell orchids. I haven't been to Lowes, so can't comment on the prices, but Costco and Trader Joe's are pretty inexpensive. What they carry probably depends on where you live somewhat. Same for Home Depot.
I believe Lowes sells plants that are about done blooming at a discount.
Local garden centers and nurseries may also discount orchids that have finished blooming - doesn't hurt to ask :)

I suggest Carmela orchids in Hawaii. The plants are nice sized and very reasonable in price. I would stay away from Costco, Home Depot if you plan to show your orchids. Better to get nice crosses that not everyone else has. The orchids from the box stores are grown by the millions in Thailand, etc. and are usually so common they don't do well in shows. I think I pay less at Carmela than I would at Home Depot. Betty

A rose is a rose is a rose. 10% off is 10% off whether it is "wholesale" a "discount" or "tax-free". ;)

To the buyer this may be true but to the seller it's a toatlly different case. If I sell $100 in wholesale Orchids I owe $0 sales tax. If I sell $100 that is not wholesale but only volume discount, I can owe to the state in question anywhere from $3 to $10. It is not the same.

You're totally right. I've never really sold anything on that scale so I wouldn't know. I do buy a lot though. :)
