Is this a flower?
 

Hello,

I am kinda new to orchid growing. I had a Cym for a couple of years and last seaon it flowered! I was so excited!!

Since then my enthusiasm has brought me lots of hand me down Cyms from friends and family who have decided that I would be a better owner, I guess we will see.

They are all doing really well and sending up new growth like crazy, but can someone please tell me what is leaves and what is a flower spike? Dumb question sorry :blushing:

well yes them new growtha look like they are doing well. If grown in the right cultural conditions they will be on their way to blooming nicely.

I'm sorry, I'm not a cym grower. It looks like great new growth, however, I would be only guessing as I've never seen a cym bloom so not sure. It looks like future flowering stalks coming on. Spikes would come from that, but is not that in itself. Hope I haven't confused you. :)

It is really hard to tell the difference between new growths and flower spikes at this stage - you'll just have to wait until they get a little bigger, part of the excitement of it all. And, by the way, the only dumb questions are the ones that don't get asked.

Most of them I have never seen flower and I dont know what they are, so it will be very interesting to see.

While it is hard to tell at this stage whether those are new growths or spikes. I'm wagering that they're just new growths.

Most Cymbidiums usually bloom in late winter to early spring.

Where you are, I believe you're nearing the end of summer.

Yeah, Im in South Australia, it is getting to the end of summer...so I guess it's not looking good then because winter/spring isnt for another 6 months-ish.

My Cym is in bloom right now, but I found the spikes late August, so end of summer. So it's entirely possible for some of those new growths to be spikes. But where I live there's a large temperature difference (up to 15°C) between day and night, so it could have sped up the induction process.
