Maudiae x micranthum cross.

I bought this plant in bud a month or two ago in Japan. It is Maudiae 'May Fly' BM/JOGA x micranthum. My understanding is that Maudiae hybrids and parvisepalum orchids do not mix well. However, the flower is large (9 x 11 cm), well formed and a striking shade of apple green and bronze.

wow.. if that is not a good mix, I would love to see a really good one :)

Very nice Paphie, Paul! I really like the color on this one... How is the dominance on nrcrantum on the plant? on the flower seems to be not very strong

Hi Ramon, I agree. I don't see much micranthum in the flower. The leaves are finely marked but lighter green and somewhat long and narrow and therefore I would say the Maudiae is dominant again.

I really expected more micranthum as well, interesting cross.

Very cool bloom!! The colors and form are very nice!

Hmmm. doubtful that the cross name is correct. IMHO

You don't see Parvi x Maudiae/Barbata hybrids often, because they are very difficult to make. This one may be mislabelled, as there is zero micranthum influence in the flower. I'd be interested to see the leaves too. The only cross like this that I've seen is Darling (Madame Martinet x lawrenceanum), which having less delenatii influence than this has micranthum (Madame Martinet being delenatii x callosum), still looks more like a Parvi. You can probably find pics of Darling on Google to see for yourself.

Either way, this is a very interesting flower. I love the dorsal patterns.

There doesn't seem to be any influence at all from Paph micranthum in this flower. A much more likely parent is a green complex hybrid of some sort x Maudiae. The pouch should be quite evidently modified in shape, and the color should show more anthocyanin influence in the petals.

Unfortunately I tend to agree with other posters that this plant is mislabeled. it's a nice maudiae cross, but the lack of micranthum's color, pattern, shape or especially the staminode in the flower is a sign that the flower cannot be the offspring of the said cross.

But even if it's mislabeled, I love the dorsal especially the 'veins'!

The only other picture I can find of a Maudiae x micranthum cross is also from a Japanese website and the cross is called Maudiae x micranthum 'Uesato'.

The plant I bought was from Sagami Orchids, a reputable breeder in Japan that regularly exhibits at orchid shows here. It is possible it is mislabeled but that would be surprising from this source.
