This orchid has under gone another name change.

When I first received it from Darwin in 09/2008 it was (Sc. Flirtie x Slc Tickety Boo) x Slc. Little Beamche. Due to Guarianthe aurantiaca parentage it was changed to (Sc. Flirtie x Guarisophleya Tickety Boo) x Slc. Little Beamchea. I was able to get one new pseudobulb and one spike with 2 flowers that first year:

This year when I checked, the genus changed again. Now it's (C Flirtie x Ctt Tickety Boo) x C Little Beamche. But further checking found (C Flirtie x Ctt Tickety Boo) registered as Ctt. Kauai Starbright. And then another check and Ctt. Kauai Starbright x C Little Beamche is registered as (expecting some exotic Hawaii name) -
Ctt. Christopher ? :(

Oh well -- he's growing like a weed, four new pseudobulbs this year producing 4 spikes with a total of 20 flowers / buds.

Hi,
Well grown plant, I wish more members of this site would do as you have done and check for the correct name of their plant's before posting them, congrat's on doing just that!!!!

Charlie, it's a gorgeous flower. I love the yellow and orange combination.

I agree about checking the names Warren... problem is I have no clue HOW to check for name changes. I really struggle with names because of all these changes.

I don't want to hijack this thread but anyone know how to keep up with these changes. I have seen on the RHS site where it gives synonyms of orchids you look up, but nothing that tells me what the current preferred name is :hmm

Finally have a nice sunny, warm day here in coastal North Carolina. A new photo showing all 18 flowers (still two buds haven't opened). Love this plant !!

Gorgeous blooms!! What a complicated history for such a cute plant. And I don't think we've seen the end of the name changing game.

As far as I know, the easiest way to keep up to date on name changes is via Orchidwiz and the like. Orchidwiz is updated every 3 months, so it always has the most current names. That being said, if you ever need an ID check, just Facebook or PM me and I'd be more than happy to check it out! Gives me an excuse to use the program, and drool over more orchids.

Hey Rosie,

The Royal Horticultural Society is the registrar for Orchid hybrids. Any newly accepted nomenclature should be reflected here. You can search by hybrid grex or by parent. Keep the search vague and don't use any punctuation, the database is picky about that stuff.

OK, here is a quick step by step on how to check your plant names.
1. Go to the RHS site
2. click on Plants
3. click on Plant finder
4. On the right hand side under other horticultural searches you will find 'Orchid Register' go there.
5. You then have 'Parentage search and Grex name search'
6. Let's say someone posted an image with the name's "Blc. Burdekin Delight x Blc. Brunswick Blush"... The first thing to do here is to get (or check) that these are valid names, so click on 'Grex name' and type in burdekin delight (all small case) , click on search and up comes the correct name.
Rhyncholaeliocattleya Burdekin Delight,
if you then click on that name it will give you the parents and all other info on this plant.
7. So we have checked that the 2 plants are valid, now we click on 'Parentage search and in the Grex box only (forget the Genus one) type in burdekin delight and below it type in brunswick blush, click on search and up will come Rhynchlaeliocattleya Karangie, it's that easy.

Before the latest RHS update of their site, there was a link to their listing of genus names, names of genus crossess, abbreviations, etc. And when they updated it, they explained why, ie when the Guarianthe aurantiaca was renamed. I can no longer find it at the RHS site. Anyone know if it is still available and where ??
