Oncidium Sweet Sugar
I bought some orchids before Christmas and have just realised that I never posted about the Oncidium (which is my first Oncidium).
I bought it as a NoID but have found out from the nursary that it is Oncidium Sweet Sugar which is Aloha Iwanaga x varicosum. I've looked at pictures of it, and pictures of the registered parents online and they all look very like mine so I'm confident the nursary has given correct info  Here it is... I love the splash of yellow in my living room! http://lh3.ggpht.com/_o4OXVkcS2VU/Sz...20Dec%2009.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_o4OXVkcS2VU/Sz...%20%282%29.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_o4OXVkcS2VU/Sz...%20%284%29.JPG |
Rosie, Mine is blooming AGAIN!. I've had it for two years and it always either has flowers, or spikes.
I just repotted mine a few months ago after the last flowering and it was the only time it didn't have flowers. After two months, it almost doubled in size, and is putting off two spikes. |
It looks great Rosie, you'll find it very easy to grow in our climate! Seems you have a healthy plant there. Where did you buy it? One of mine is just out of bloom and the other just started :-)
I agree, the yellow spash of flowers is great in a livingroom! Nicole |
It came from my local garden center (Dobbies) but the label pointed me to Cameleon Orchids which is where I got the name from (and is also over in The Netherlands where you are :))
Good to hear it flowers lots. Hope I can look after it as I'm really new to this alliance. |
Rosie, when I say this is the easiest orchid I have growing, I really mean it. It tolerates the hot summers we have here, the monsson rains, the near freezing temps outdoors in our winters, and our winter droughts.
Mine started as a 3" potted plant that in two years fills a 6" clay pot. I'll see if I can post pics of the last time it had flowers on it (that lasted almost 4 months).... Here we go, this was back in the summer... had two more spikes coming in and after that a repot.. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...IMG_1154-1.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1153.jpg |
Wow
Looks like you picked a winner there!!! Karen |

Thanks GotAnts, I'm just not sure I'm having much luck with this aliance. I've bought several recently and they all have the same problem... yellowing/browning leaves and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm going to raise another thread about it once I have some pics.
Anyway this one is so far OK although I think that it too has lost a leaf since I bought it. |
Is this a spike or a lead growth?
While watering today I've spotted something.
Is this a new 'lead growth' or a new spike? (Click on the pic to enlarge). http://lh4.ggpht.com/_o4OXVkcS2VU/Sz...%20%287%29.JPG Also the p-bulbs are all quite wrinkled like the one showing. They are quite firm, just wrinkled. Is this OK? I'm new to these so don't really know what to expect and I've heard some in this alliance will normally be wrinkled. :hmm Oh and I know the medium looks really wet in this pic, but I took the pic in the middle of watering it and it and drained it soon after. |
