Hello from new member from the UK
 

Hi, I've been keeping phalaenopsis as a hobby for a few years now. I've come to the stage where I need help and advice and some fellow enthusiasts to share my hobbie with :) I stumbled across this forum and it seems really friendly and informative.
I'm going to have to try to find out where to post my questions now. Any pointers gratefully received.
I want to post questions about a problem with my orchid, not sure if it is a pest or a disease. And I'd like to post a question about the strange way one of my plants is growing - leaf halfway up a flowering stem. I'm not sure where to post these with more details though.
Any advice welcomed.

A picture of the phal in question would be good to see.

Welcome Rach. It is good to have another forum member from the UK.
You may be in luck with a source of definitive information in the UK because a branch of the International Phalaenopiss Alliance (based in the USA) has reorganised in the UK and will be up and running in January.
Peter White of Orchids by Peter White who you might have seen trading at shows has agreed to take over as the UK regional Director. Membership is only £10 per year.
You can get details of the UK branch at their website phalaenopsis.org.uk.
Also, as I am Secretary of the British Orchid Council (British Orchid Council (a Registered Charity).) I can let you know your nearest Orchid Society contact where you could get help.
Most importantly, just keep enjoying your orchids.

Personally if unsure I usually post stuff in the 'beginner discussion'. It's a good general place to put something when you are not sure the best place.

Perhaps as a moderator of this forum I should be able to give you better directions than that, but as a moderator I can tell you that we don't really mind too much where you post something, we are very relaxed here. :biggrin:.

We may move something if it's not getting many answers and we think it would get more in a different place. Also we may move a post if it's obviously in the wrong alliance sub-forum (like a question about a Phal in the Catt alliance section or something), but again that's more to help you get answers than anything else.

Don't worry about posting in the wrong place, it's better to ask your question somewhere rather than not at all. :nod:

Thanks so much everyone, so happy to have found this forum! I will organise pics of the orchids in question and post up my questions in the beginners forum. Will do individual threads for both queries to make it easier for those responding, and I guess for people who may search for the same soloution. I am guessing most problems aren't unique, but it's hard to search the forum for an answer already posted if you don't really know what you problem is called :D

If you have a picture post it here. That would greatly help in determining your problem with your orchid.

i am just beginning to find my way around this site and see you are a new member as well. i live near Biggleswade and now have a small mixed collection. i have been growing for 35 years and now have a little experience of doin this and showing plants. i have a few 'specimens' which seem to dominate my collection but they have been with me for a long time. i collect mostly species but have quite a few hybrid Cattleyas, of which 'Bow Bells - July' has the wow factor. i have probably the biggest D. nobile in the south of the country and it looks as if it may be in flower for the end of February.
