angraecum sesquipedale spike broken
Help! I have an angraecum sesquipedale which I have had for 3 years. It just bloomed for the first time, one spike with an open bloom and one bud. Well, I had 3 granddaughters over for Thanksgiving dinner, and somehow the spike sustained some mechanical damage. Pinched place, turning yellow/brown, and the bloom is now dying. My question-is there any way to save the bud?
I'm used to getting phals to rebloom by cutting the spike, but this plant has no nodes. What do I do? Thanks! |
I doubt it. It doesn't take this much damage to have Angraecum drop buds or blast a spike. Sometimes just looking crosswise. I have good luck with mine in a tank with high humidity and strong breeze.

Ross is right. Angraecum sesquipedale won't react like a phalaenopsis if you cut its spike. Do your plant the favor of cutting the spike off so that it can put its energy into growing stronger, since there's little good to be done by trying to save a damaged spike and/or buds. On a positive note, if your plant's old enough to bloom this year, it should bloom again next winter. Sesquipedale's an easy and dependable bloomer, in my experience, once it reaches flowering size.

Bummer! That's what I thought, but figured I'd ask just in case.
Thanks for your quick response. Judy |
