Remounting plants
 

I recently bought three seedlings (among other plants). They are: Oerstadella centradenia, Laelia purpurata and Brassavola cucullata. They are mounted on cork and the mounts, in keeping with the size of the plants are quite small. In the future it will be necessary to remount these plants. They are growing nice roots and new leads. When the time comes, do I just fasten the old mount to a new, larger one? I cannot see trying to pry loose the roots, I know they would be damaged. Thanks for any advice.

I recently remounted a Brassavola cucullata myself. It had been on a Tree Fern Mount but I was unable to detach it from the mount so I mounted the entire thing to a new mount, tree fern and all. Might not be the best solution so I too am interested to hear the opinions of the other OB members.

I have often taken a small mount and attached ot to a larger one. It works great for me.

I am in a similar situation at the moment with roots from some of my plants attaching themselves to neighbouring mounts, but my cork mounts are rather thick, and I don't particularly want to just stick one on top of the other. I'm thinking of cutting out a central section of the new mounts and inserting the old mount into the resulting hole. Can you think of any reason why this wouldn't work?

I've also done the same thing several times with rotting tree fern mounts; I took a pair of needle-nosed pliers and stripped away as much of the old, soggy tree fern as I could manage, being careful to avoid the roots. Then I just wired it to the new mount. A couple of times I stripped a hollow area out of the new piece of tree fern to give the old one a depression to nestle in. Seems like a similar idea to Tyler's with the cork mounts. Can't think of why it wouldn't work with cork, as long as you're careful about the roots.
