Who grows Dendrobium fimbriatum?

I'm having a heck of a time with this plant - not with the blooming, but with its ever-increasing size/height.
Last year's cane was chest-high; this year's is just up to the middle of my forehead...nope, I am a person of average height. The plant is still in the 4" basket it has been in for years. And, really, a bigger container would not solve the problem of long, long canes, with or without leaves, just flopping all over the place.
Somebody who grows this - how do you handle this?
I am thinking of re-orienting the basket onto its side - the canes will still be long, but at least they will all go in the same direction.
I'm really afraid of maiming the plant, stepping on it, breaking somebody off, etc.
Thanks - Nancy

What you could do is get a large clay pot (6-8") with side holes and put heavy brick chunks on the bottom. And tie the canes as they grow into clump, and it's usually managed that way for that group. If you are growing in the greenhouse, it would not be a problem since all the growth will be growing up ward anyway. Only if you grown them in window sill, that the canes kindda go all over the place.

Unfortunately, it's part of the package deal. If you want to grow fimbriatum, you have to swallow the long canes. It's not the best species to grow in confined space, bc the canes can be up to over a meter long. Or try smaller species like gibsonii or dixanthum. If your area is frost free yearround, just tie the whole clump to a tree in yard and let the plant grow wild. fimbriatum is one of the cool grower and can take temp down to 4-5'C in winter.
