Phalaenopsis violacea var. coerulea
This is the first blooming of this phal.
I am disappointed with the coloring. Does anyone know if this (color) will get better with future blossomings? I got it from a very well respected vendor and overall it is a very nice, healthy plant. As I do with all my phals, it is potted in S. moss. Thanks, Al http://www.orchidboard.com/community...v-coerulea.jpg |
Al, I don't have this species yet. What I can tell you that I do have Dtps. Orglade's Puff 'Snowball' x Phal. violacea 'Gulfstream Blue'. I do get darker bluer flowers when it is exposed to cooler than usual Phal temps (40-50 degree winter highs). Also the color did improve with age.

Al, I think it's a lovely flower! I'd be quite happy with it, personally.
The coloration may deepen or otherwise change with future blooms, but it also may not. Seedling blooms tend to be a bit less than the plant is capable of as it matures a bit more, though. |
Jkofferdahl is correct. The flower may or may not get better with future bloomings. I would say this coloring is fairly typical unless you get a linebred plant. The Nortons at Orchidview have some excellent crosses, and they will be darker blue if you get one of their coerulea-coerulea crosses. Now, if only mine would hurry up and get big enough to bloom :tapfoot:.

Ted:
Thanks for the response. This is the first time I've ever seen one in person and I guess I was expecting more after seeing pictures of them from the net. It would be great to see a pic of your Dtps. Orglade's Puff 'Snowball' x Phal. violacea 'Gulfstream Blue'. :-) I can't keep it at 40 to 50 degrees but I can move it to a place that holds around 55F. John: Thanks, it's probable because I've never had anything to compare it to "in hand" so to say. :-) I do notice a difference with my phals regarding temperature. The cooler grown ones have a bit more intense color. The trade off is slower growth with the cool temps. With winter coming on strong here, cool temps won't be any problem. (sigh) What do you guys think about the shape? I hope they 'straighten' out. Al |
Hi Sue,
Thanks for the encouragement. But now I have to find a towel and dry the drool off the keyboard. I've lusted over the Nortons plants and will have one some day. Sure hope you post a picture when your girl decides to show off. Al Quote:

Al, I think the shape is very nice! If by straighten out you mean not lean to one side, that's a non-issue to me - though I can see why you might prefer it. But it's nice and flat, and with a good proportion to the shape.
I really do think you've got a very nice bloom! |
Al - if you are truly disappointed in this violacea ..
you can always send it to me  I think it's lovely :cloud9: |
Dorothy, That is EXACTLY what I was about to say!
Send it my way, Al. Seriously, I could take it off your hands and you could save up for a purchase from the Nortons. ;) |
Hey Royal! :tapfoot: I said it first ! :nana:
