Re: winter rest? can't find info..
 

I have studied the very helpful list provided by Ambassador on the beginner site; but somehow I have ended up with all these other dendrobiums that are not on that list. Can you tell me if they do or don't need a winter rest. and I will tag them so I will know in the future

And for those that do, do I just water them lightly between now and the end of the month? Or don't water and only mist?

and then there are 5 or 6 dendrobium that I rescued, that have no names...........rest? no rest? slight rest?

Dendrobium Fimbriatum vs. oculatum Needs a cool (63-67 degree days and 48-51 degree nights), very bright light, and greatly reduced watering. Do not allow do stay completely dry for extended periods.
den nobile spring bride (all nobiles need a rest?)This hybrid is less than 25% nobile. Stop fertilizing in August, and start reducing water in fall. I would treat it like a nobile but perhaps give it a bit more water than a nobile.
den alan umaki x jag-cncert sakaiThis is a warm grower that does not need a true winter rest. Just slightly reduce water and fertilizer in winter months.
den nopporn pinkThis is another Phal type warm growing Den. No winter rest needed just a slight reduction in watering and fertilizing.
den riky Sie - Tokilo Inaba x Burmese rubyThis appears to be an unregistered hybrid. Again, it's predominately a Phal type so no need for winter rest, just a reduction in water and fert.

I checked the AOS site for info on the Notylia and it doesn't mention a winter rest so I would assume you should give year-round care to this one :Tup:

Notylia barkeri is a species. This is not a Dendrobium relative. Notylia are in the Maxillaria tribe.

I asked about the notalia barkeri because on the list Sue posted for dendrobiums needing a winter rest,
barkeria spectabilis and barkeria marsh Melton were mentioned..........but those are totally different from notalia barkeri, I am now guessing?

Barkeria spectabilis and Barkeria Marsh Melton are not in the same alliance as Notylia barkeri.

Barkeria spectabilis is a species. It is in the Cattleya Alliance. Yes it does have a period of dormancy. But it doesn't need to be completely dry in the fall and winter months. Just dryer than in the warmer months.

Barkeria Marsh Melton is a hybrid (notice how I'm capitalizing the name here versus how I wrote Barkeria spectabilis; be diligent with how you're typing orchid names it DOES matter). It is in the same genus as Barkeria spectabilis, therefore it is also in the Cattleya Alliance.

Notylia barkeri is not in the same genus as the two previously mentioned plants. It is not even in the same alliance. Like I said before, Notylia barkeri is in the Maxillaria Alliance.

While I'm on the topic of capitalizing genus names, grex names, and cultivar names while lower casing species, variant names, and subspecies names...

Den Fimbriatum var oculatum should be spelled:

Den fimbriatum var oculatum (this is a species)

thanks for the heads up re. the difference between the Barkeria and barkeria, and also the importance of caps.
I know there was a pneumonyic (?spelling) I learned in freshman biology about the rankings of genus, species, variety, etc. I will have to ask a college biology student.

PS How do you mark yours that need a winter rest........a certain color tag? or do you just remember?

The list is actually for orchids that need a winter rest, not specifically Dens although most of them happen to be Dendrobiums ;)

I'm not really too big on hybrids. I own a few. But that's a small percentage of my collection. And I currently don't own any Den hybrids.

The Dens I do own are mostly deciduous and go dormant anyways, so I don't have to mark anything. There's nothing to mark. :)
