Dendrobium Keiki

I'm not much into Dendrobium but as part of my branching out from Phals, I have this little guy that had a nasty case of mealy bug this summer when it was given to me. With all the spraying of insecticides and major effort to clean it up some of the plant died back but now I see keikis growing with roots!!!!!:yikes: I know with my phal keikis, I wait until the roots are 3 in number and about 3" long before removing them. Do most of you follow this same thing with Dendrobium? And is it helpful to wrap these little guys in sphagnum to keep them moist or does that lead to potential rot?

Next question: the tag says "D. compactum x Udom Blue Angle. Doing a search, can't find "Udom" :help:help:help

Thanks Charlie. I was wondering if the "Odum" was from Odum Orchid in Thailand. They don't have a website anymore... ?not in business? Anyway, the D. compactum is also a blue/purple. So maybe in a few years when this recovers, I might just have some nice flowers.....

Hey Bikerdoc I have the same thing going on with my Dens. lots of new growth all over several but I don't know what to do with them. If I cut the Keiki off should I cut and leave some of the old cane connected. So many questions. I would love to give some of the Keikis away.

Well, this is a great place to give/trade your extra plants. Maybe not just now because it is getting cold through the northern tier and it wouldn't take much for a plant to die from exposure! I plan on dividing my cattleya in the spring and hope to find new homes for them and maybe receive a Bulbo or Masdy or who knows what....

Den Keiki's

Sheridan,

I had the same question with a Den Red Emperor. Here is the thread:

http://www.orchidboard.com/community...or-prince.html

Jerry Meola, Pelican Coast Nursery, the source of my plant, suggested leaving some cane attached in an email, which I can't find :(

But my two large keiki were so close together on the same cane, that wasn't feasible. To date, my two removed keikis are doing good and growing.

When you are ready to trade some keikis, let me know :)

Charlie I will keep that in mind. I need to let the roots grow a bit more. These are very large Dens. which I purchased from Carmela's Orchids Hawaii.

Den. Burana Emerald Burana
Den. Kasem White & Royal Colors 'Carmela'
Den. Paskel Kuning Hawaii

I will try and post some photos tomorrow.

Sorry don't mean to hijack this thread.

Not to worry about hijacking.... the only people who get their nose out of joint, which BTW is difficult to do without actually breaking it, are... well.... we're supposed to be here for everyone's mutual well-being and acquisition of knowledge... I think it's called "sharing"!

Since I started this thread, I'd love to see the pictures and maybe even be included in trading... I also got a D. Paskel Kuning Hawaii but it didn't survive the mealy bug treatment....

I leave my keki's attached untill they have roots three or four inches long usually ....but sometimes I nip the old cane off at the base and pot em up after it dries up a little.

It depends on how close to the pot the keki is if its at the top of a cane I just let them grow and even have some blooming still attached to the parent plant

I just took one off last month and potted it up in s/h It already had roots 6 inches long in masses and is now spiked and buds are coloring up and will be opening in 2 or 3 weeks.

with my Home depo noid it just dosent seem to matter what you do it will preform well and throw kekis like crazy
