OB slow lately

Something is messing up with the hosting company, connection is up one minute down the next... pretty annoying!

Thanks for the update.

I noticed that. Maybe it's Tin getting his posts ready

I would definately use this forum more if the performance was better - lots of good information and appears to be a good base of knowledge. It is frustrating having to wait for updated pages all the time. Another issue is that one pc I have I get a security message with every page update, "to help protect your security, Internet Explorer stopped this site from installing an AcitiveX control on your computer. Click here for options...." I don't get this message on any of the other orchid forums I visit! Hope things progress in the future - THANKS! mike

I'll let Marty address your concerns, however since I have critical of performance from time to time, let me say that the board over the last 5-6 months has been flawless for me 90% of the time. I used to have all sorts of issues. I discovered that Zone Alarm Pro (my firewall software) was the problem. Since I customized the settings for Orcidboard.com, I have had no issues to speak of. I use DSL connection and typically the pages display quite quickly. Just my 2 cents.

This probably IS related to corporate firewall? I don't have the problem at home - but it is annoying nonetheless. I'll deal with it one way or other........just thought I'd throw it out as a fact of at least one user's experience......

Sometimes Corporate firewalls aren't that user friendly. Companies want to protect their assets and that comes before your comfort. If you get this at home, check your firewall settings. Marty can't be expected to be an expert on all of them so he tends to recommend "clear the cookies, yatta, yatta." But I am suggesting the faults lies with us users. Don't give up on the Board. This is the number 1 board on the web for orchid-related stuff!

I have absolutely no issues with the performance here. I am on dial up but never have seen the supposed 56K speed at any time. But irregardless this site comes through in good order. So I wonder if the issue is something else:scratchhead:

Marty 03-07-2007 08:21 PM

Tman, if you're on 56K you have nothing to worry about :)

mayres: Yes, the active X prompt is probably to install Macromedia flash to display the waterfall animation in the top left corner. I'm thinking that maybe I should disable the flash and just do it static. I like the moving waterfall, but I know some people are sceptical of installing anything when an 'untrusted' website prompts them. I have flash installed, so I never see this prompt and therefore I tend to forget about it. I'll see what I can do about that.

I'm very tempted to jump to a dedicated server in order to speed things up, but I'll probably have to dish out $100+ out of pocket every month. We don't have too many sponsors yet advertising and google ads don't bring that much so it's a tough call...esp with the wife being off from work for the last 8 months staying with the little guy. If I move us to a dedicated server, you may just see more google ads around...though I don't really want to do that. I'm not about start asking for member donations either.

Take a look at that PC again. Is it still prompting you for the ActiveX ?

The waterfall in the header has now been changed to static. Water no longer flows at OB :)
