Does anyone know first-hand, if Encyclia tampansis is in spike/bloom right now in Forida? I'll be there next week, and want to photograph it in situ and need to know it's progress. Mine here at home has started to spike but is a ways to go before bloom.

Wish I could help you Ross, where about are you going in Fl?

Ross,

Which area are you visiting in Florida? The farther south in Florida, the sooner they bloom. In my area, the spikes are just breaking the point of the apex of the pseudobulb and leaf. Florida specimens bloom like clockwork in June, where all populations can be seen in full bloom. Hope this helps somewhat :)

I'll be at Ft Desoto Beach in next couple weeks. Was hoping the natives were a bit ahead of my captured plants.

My apologies for responding to your question sooner. You can almost always find Encyclia tampansis, on ebay, where I have purchased two. One is an alba, both mounted in an oak tree. I look forward to the June bloom and wonderful fragrance.

I saw this orchid in bloom in the everglades on a tree on vacation in July of 1992.:photo: I have two babies now, that I purchased on e-bay that are doing great. Hopefully will bloom in the next year or two.:scratchhead: They were growing on cypress trees but I hve mine in sphagnum in a coconut husk planter with epidendrum radicans and all seem extremely happy.:) GOOD LUCK!:cheer:
