OOPS, I bought another masda
Another Masdevallia
I managed to kill 3 of them a couple of years ago, but I keep seeing such pretty pics on the forum. I decided to give another one a try. Masdevallia Copper Angel 'Highland AM/AOS. We will see how long I can keep this one alive. I'll try to keep this one cooler. Marilyn |
Good luck.
I'm just trying my first and hoping not to kill it. :crossfing |
Try a temperature range of 45 F to 80 F.
Masd Copper Angel should be a fairly good one to start with. Masd Dean Haas is actually even better than Copper Angel because they repeat bloom and grows just like Copper Angel. The trick is to keep the cooler growing ones cool, (a terra cotta pot would help), keep them evenly moist (Supersphag and perlite works well to help retain fairly consistent moisture while providing enough aeration - keep in mind I have 2 parts perlite to 1 part Supersphag), and provide good aeration overall (stagnant air around the leaves and roots is not good). Masdies grow in shade to bright shade. |
You guys, there are more intermediate to warm growing Masdies you know...
Try something like Masdevallia princeps and clan. Masdevallia herradurae, Masd impostor, Masd livingstoneana, and Masd wendlandiana are warmth tolerant as well. Masd infracta is temperature tolerant and comes in different color schemes. As far as other hybrids I can recommend that are a bit more warmth tolerant, Masd Sunset Jaguar 'Nightbreed' is easy to grow here. I grew it outdoors and it bloomed pretty easily. I have a pic of it in my album if I'm not mistaken. |
I need to look for a couple warm growers. I bought this from our speaker a our club meeting, and knew nothing about it. Sure wish I could get to the Chicago fest and look around there. I don't drive that far alone. I just have to surf the dealers on line,

Check for Masd strobelii or Masd mejiana... they do pretty well for me, and we have very hot and long summers here...
|
I'm growing both cool growers and warm-tolerant next to each other. But keep in mind our summers are much cooler than most folks here :)
|
Ross, did we have a summer this year? If we did I must have missed that day.
