Hello
Hi everyone. My daughter stumbled across this site this morning while tring to discover why one of my Phals has a reddish spike.
I have three Phals which reside in my breakfast nook and sewing room. I also have lots of questions, so this seemed like a good group to join. |
Hi... :welcome:
3 is a nice number to start with ;) This is a great place to find information on your (or any) orchids :) It's nice to have you here...let us know what happens with your phal. By the way, I haven't looked yet, but did you post your question in the forums? |

Welcome to the orchid board. I don't know why you might have a reddish spike. I'm quite curious as I have never heard of this before.

Firstly, welcome.
Red spike is not strange with Phals. If you mean reddish or maroonish then I wouldn't worry. |
For the same reason that you will sometimes find the under sides of Phal. leaves a maroon color, you will also find the same color in the flower spikes. I have noticed that the more sun that my Phals. receive the more coloring in both the leaves and the spikes.
|
My only other thought was a maroon colored growth tip of a new root. Without a pic, its hard to tell.
Many Phals do exhibit the maroon coloration of the leaves (especially undersides). If i recall correctly, it can be due to the influence of one of the species used in many hybrids. I dont remember which one though. |
