Haraella retrocalla (aka odorata)

I know everybody grows this...still, a real treat to see that big flower on the tiny little plant. More buds coming on, too. This is allegedly scented, but I have never detected any...hence, theoretically, the 'odorata.'

Hi Nancy, Your's looks nice and happy mounted like that. Is that a root behind the new bud? If so, that's interesting. I have mine potted and haven't seen any roots come out from between the leaves.
They are prolific bloomers, once they get started. Bill |
It's lovely!!! I bought this little plant less than two month ago and it has already taken possess of its new bark and... 5 spikes! O__O
It's a very very nice teeny tiny chid! :) |
way to go Nancy!
check for fragrance in the morning/early afternoon. I need to put my nose right up to the blooms almost - but there is a definite 'lemony' fragrance - or as Camille noted, rather like citronella. Don't cut the spike after blooming if it is green - can develop more buds on the same spike ;) |
I love this little orchid! Mine keeps putting out buds on each of the two spikes, so it's almost constantly in bloom. Not all of them appear to be fragrant though. This was a project plant, and many people had one that just didn't smell at all. Sometimes you have to wait a few days for the bloom to be mature before it will smell.

I'm not growing this one, but I love all the pics I've seen of them. It's definately gone on my list.

Mine has a definate sweet scent to my nose, a la candy store/lemon heads. If you leave the spike alone after the flowers fade another will form in its place. Nearly an everblooming plant and worth a place in any collection. Yours is just adorable.
