Phal. Sogo Yukidian 'V3': to buy or not?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all. :waving
I received an email from a vendor I signed up with about a phalaenopsis special. Any 3 phals for $50, including shipping in pot. I've got 2 picked out already: Dtps Rong Guan Mary and Dtps I-Hsin Ice Coke 'KH7155'. I'm trying to decide whether to add Phal. Sogo Yukidian 'V3' or not. I already have a white phal NOID with 5-6 inch flowers, but it never seems to hold more than 4 or 5 flowers. If it makes more buds, they just abort. I've had it for almost 4 years now, the first year it didn't bloom because my brother broke the spike, and so it's now forming it's second spike since I got it (it bloomed twice on one spike, but I cut that one off last year to see if I would get more blooms on a new spike). It does look very similar to Sogo Yukidian, but I'm wondering if it will ever produce near as many flowers. Would it be worth getting the Sogo Yukidian? Just FYI: As alternates, I'm also looking at Phal. mannii, Phal. philippinensis, and Dtps. I-Hsin Picture "#23' Thanks for your input! Here's a pic of my Phal. NOID for comparison: Attachment 35638 |
I would totally pick up the Sogo Yukidian and have been looking for the last few months. From the pics in Orchids Magazine, this one looks absolutely phenomenal!!

First of all... Can I get the website for this offer. Ha, that's what I need 3 more Phals. As to if it's worth it, that's totally up to you. It's a great orchid, but I dont have any experience with it. If you already have a big white, maybe not, but this one will likely be better at cascading with big whites, especially if well taken care of. Totally your call. I'm a huge fan of the Phal. mannii, but never had an opportunity to grab one, but if I can get that website... Best of luck, and let us know what you decide

I have one big white NOID and would probably not get another. My vote would be for the always adorable mannii, or cornu cervi if that's available.
Hey! What's up with not sharing the website with your good ol' OB buddies? ;) |
Evan, it's a question of what you want in your particular collection. I have some Phal hybrids and I love them. However, my own preference is for Phal species. For that reason I would go for philippinensis, which is the showier of the two you've mentioned and can produce a nice spray of flowers.

i got mannii, bastianii, equestris from ebay's larry's orchids... you can get them for 4/6 bucks each + shipping [7 + 1.5 each additional]. large white hybrids I can't look at anymore - at every Home Depot and every hotel lobby....
saw a great one with an horizontal spike at some chinatown hair salon - in the window - they had also a large pot with some yellow cattleya-like - i was surprised to see some blooms as it looked dark inside - and that store window gets morning sun - being eastern exposure... anyway I got the mannii - still waiting for it in the mail - I think it makes a lot of keikis... but after some thought i got the bastianii as well as i liked it better. look up the mannii on ebay... get from that store what you cant get for cheaper elsewhere... stefano |

OOPS!!! :blushing: I did forget that, didn't I? Terri, I think I saw before that you've ordered from them previously? Here it is folks! May your wallets be tempted! Orchidaceae, Inc. Thanks everybody for helping me weigh matters. After a little bit of thought, I think I'll pass on the Sogo Yukidian (for now). My "Great White NOID" is my first orchid, and I wouldn't want to hurt it's feelings by bringing home a more expensive model. I'll just see what it can do as the years go by. Nick, I'll leave the Sogo Yukidian to you! ;) As for what to replace it with...I'm down to either the philipinensis or the mannii. I'll probably pick the philipinensis, since it has a great floral show plus gorgeous leaves when it's not in bloom. I have a stuartiana, and it's gotten me hooked on mottled-leaved phals! Not that I don't eventually want a mannii, too! I hear mannii is scented, but not reliably, so I'd rather find one that definitely is scented. Both are being offered as seedlings, but with the blooming size hybrids I'll get along with them, I can be patient! I kinda wanted to take the fullest advantage of their offer, since their plants are usually expensive, blooming size orchids, but I think I'll be fine getting $64 worth of plants out of them for only $50, instead of the $81 worth I would have gotten out of them with the Sogo in the order. Besides, I do love species phals! Thanks again for helping with my thought process. I'm one of those who needs to talk about my decisions and think about them a LOT! (also known as OVERthinking and annoying everyone around you with your obsessive decision-making  ) |
Thanks Evan. I've not purchased from them before, but have bookmarked the link and will peruse it later.
I hear you about agonizing over what to buy. I do it because my space is so very limited I have to make every purchase count. I'm still pondering an order with Orchidview and I started that process back in June! (How can one be expected to choose from so many beautiful blue Phal. violaceas?) |
You and I have the same problem Terri, SPACE! I'm in a dorm room and since I don't trust my parents with most of my orchids, a lot of them come with me to school. Plus I've got college to pay for!
But I work hard and save a lot, so I deserve an orchid splurge now and then, right? ;) Besides, I got a $50 check from my grandparents for my birthday and just a few days later, I find out about this $50 offer. It's meant to be! (so what if I just got 4 orchids in the mail today  they're minis and seedlings to boot!) I can squeeze a few more plants into this room and I need more healthy, blooming size plants! |
Orchidaceae has awesome plants and Mark Srull is a fantastic grower. The Paph. Macabre that got the FCC at the Oregon Orchid Society show in May was the most amazing plant.
