Some pretties in bloom
 

Though most Phals are growing rather than blooming this time of year I do have some pretty flowers in bloom now, as well as a Phal. heiroglyphica with two budded spikes. First is Phal. intermedia; I have a second also in bud and a week or two behind this one. Both are in their second cycle this year.

It looks big in this picture, but the Phal. delisiosa bloom shown, one of 5 or 6 blowers on the spike, is tiny. This one is on my largest of three deliciosas, and the only one which didn't bloom earlier this year. The bloom would easily be hidden behind a dime.

Though I love Phal. equestris (and all of the others!), my favorite is probably Phal. cornu-cervi. Two of my five are in bloom with two others early in spike. The first is cornu-cervi #1 (so named only so I can tell them apart). (Phal. lamelligera, which some call a variant of cornu-cervi, should also open more flowers in a few weeks.)

Phal. cornu-cervi #2 has a slightly different shape to the flower, with the sepals showing more size compared to the petals, and the lower sepals being closer together.

I don't think I've ever seen a Phal deliciosa before. To what areas are they native?
If you tell me they are native to the Philippines, which is where I grew up, I guess they were all hiding behind dimes while I was hiking the rain forests.:)

From OrchidWiki: "Plants grow in lowland forest of India to SE Asia, Java, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines at elevations below 600 meters " so I'd have to guess the ones in the Philippines were indeed hiding behind those pesky dimes! :rofl: The plants themselves are quite small; two of my three have leaf spans under 4" tip to tip and have bloomed while the one flowering now has a leaf span of maybe 6".

The sad part is that I lived at the foot of Mt. Makiling-- one of those lowland forests below 600 m and there are no dimes to be found in the Philippines.

Very nice blooms. Only my 'big leaf' Phal NOID hybrid is in spike.

All lovely John! My 2 favorites are cornu cervi #2 and deliciosa.

Those are all really really nice. I especially like the intermedia.
