Ummm, I don't know how to break it to you but that's isn't Musa basjoo.
Basjoo has a yellow flower and the bananas remain tiny and undeveloped. I have a photo somewhere of mine, will see if I can find it. WHere did you buy it? Lots of places have been selling bananas that are supposed to be Basjoo which aren't. If you'd like to get an ID for it, I know a great banana forum with lots of knowledgeable folks. |
well dang it I can't find my own photo of my basjoo, but there is a most excellent one at this location:
Bananen Or you can Google "images" for Musa Basjoo and see lots of photos. |
Whatever it is, banana flowers it seems are really really pretty!!!!

I agree. Most common bananas are red. But there are others like basjoo that are yellow (as I recall). Actually, that looks like the "monkey banana" to me.

Here's a pic I stole from the web http://www.orchidboard.com/community...284979_718.jpg There was no copyright notice so I think I'm OK. This is Musa basjoo.

If your banana tree was shorter, I would think it might be Raja Puri
The bloom and bananas look very similar to my Raja but I don't think yours is Raja.. I have a banana tree in my yard that is very similar to the one you posted, gets really really tall with a nice red flower, but I never knew the cultivar name. We never harvest the bananas anyway whether they are edible or not, we leave them for the squirrels so that hopefully they leave our birdfeeders alone. |
This is a photo of my Raja Puri, I think I must have tossed my Basjoo photo

I'm not too positive on the Musa ID, and I see now that those Musa basjoo do have yellow sheaths. I will look into the ID later... :)
Here are some neat pictures of bananas I saw at Selby Gardens today... there are many, but the pictures didn't turn out very well...
