Phalaenopsis on mounts

Hi everybody,

How are you? I'm new to the world of Phalaenopsis and am enjoying the experience...I've grown epiphytes for sometime though and have experience in the Australian Sarcochilus...

I was wondering though - have many people had success growing their Phalaenopsis hybrids/species mounted? and if so on what? cork? tree fern? i would think tree fern might retain moisture too long...

Any thoughts?

Also, are there any Phal fans on the forum from Australia?

I grow all of my Phals mounted on cork bark with a bit of moss.

Been over a year going on 2 yrs.

:hello
I have recently mounted a couple of species phals on grapewood - one the roots had rotted in the pot. Both started growing new roots in a few days after being mounted, tho of course it is summer here, so perhaps they would have regardless, idk. I used a bit of sphag under and over the roots.
Both plants are doing very well :)

Thanks for your replies - i'm interested in trying this as i always love the look of a nice healthy mounted epiphyte...

Can you also grow the hybrids on mounts? or is it better to keep those in pots?

G'day OzPhal,
There are plenty of Phal growers in Oz but I don't know of any who are Forum members. Maybe they will 'fess up.
I have a dozen or so and a couple are looking a little sad after having been left with a neighbour for a month during my absence in NQ. I am blaming the weather rather than my neighbour.
What part of Oz do you call home?

Baz

G'day Baz,

Nice to hear from you and also see that there are some fellow Australians out there! Gotta love leaving them with the neighbour for safe keeping :) that's actually how my love of orchids started at the age of 13. I'm hoping, eventually, to have a fully automated glasshouse with fertiliser dowing, fan controls, blah blah blah :D

Melbourne is my humble abode... you?

G'day OzPhal,
I'm up on the Sunshine Coast in that other State named after a queen.
While I was up in NQ, I swapped some orchids with an enthusiast living in Townsville who I met through OB.
There is a sprinkling of Aussies who are active members of OB.
