Dendrobium cane drying up
 

Hi, I've have a Dendrobium that's grown well, which I've even divided. Lots of new growth but NO new spikes/flowers and the cane in the center (the original/oldest one) is shriveling from the top down. Any diagnosis? How to I get them to flower again? Advice much appreciated. :)

Hi think you should have added a picture.That helps a lot.How are the roots?Any change in the watering shedule? u can get new kiekies by spraying some kiki spray but flowering depends upon the plant :)

What type of dendrobium do you have? Some need a dry winter rest before they bloom.

tskn. That's normal for an old cane. The old cane has nurtured the new growths which seem to be growing nicely (just as we nurture our children and hope they grow healthy and strong). The old cane has food and nourishment which goes to the new growths, until the old growth is shriveled, dry and completely depleted (which we hope our own children don't do to us).

When the old growth is dried out, you can cut it off at the base with a clean knife.

From the growth habit, your plant seems to be an antelope (curved or curly petals (like antelope horns) or phalaenopsis type (with rounder shaped flowers). It seems to be very compact in height also. The lush dark green long leaves indicate that you could also give the plant stronger light.

I believe this type of den does not need a dry winter rest, but should be kept watered and fertilized year round. It may like to dry out slightly between waterings. Catwalker808 may know better.
