How to sow vanda seeds?
I managed to collect some ripe vanda fruits with seeds,
please guide me how to sow them and propagate them. Dev |
I can only give you limited advice in this arena. Other people should continue where I leave off.
Vanda seeds do not keep for very long. You must sow this immediately. I don't think you have time to sow this in-vitro, as you would have to wait for supplies to get to you. Try sowing ex-vitro. First off grab a piece of bark that the Vanda seeds you collected came from. Then follow these directions. Lotte & Thomas Orchids Don't use tap water. If it has chlorine in it you will kill the necessary mycorrhizal fungi to help you germinate the seeds and you will kill the seeds. |
Orchid seeds are usually germinated in a laboratory under sterile conditions inside test tubes or on a petri dish. If you have access to the right supplies you can do it in your house.
You will need: nutrient media - homemade or store bought, containers or flasks - can be re-used bottles or babyfood jars, a pressure cooker (or research other ways to sterilize the flasks), and a clean work space - you can make one, be creative. |
Hi please let me know which media can be used.
I am a dentist and have enough exposure to sterilization. where can I get a bit more of details. |

The link that King posted is a good one. They discuss a few different methods that may help you get pointed in the right direction. You can also check the Orchid Seedbank Project - just do a web search. This site has lots of helpful information. I hope you find what you need. Keep us posted. |
I hope you have a lot of space, and are ready for another addiction!

So well said,it is another addiction.Subconciously I am planing how to get it done.

Out of curiosity. Are you interested in trying out the symbiotic in-vitro method of orchid seed sowing for Vandas in the future? It seems like you're in a perfect position to try it.
Aside from the orchid seeds, you'd also have to culture the correct fungus through fungal isolation and trial and error. |
Well I know nothing about fungus.
only thing I can do is put the seeds on wood/bark and put moss on it and keep it moist. if that is good enough, I will try it. |
