Summer 2009 Project - PLANT CRITERIRA
 

Now that we have a few participants. I've got some questions about the plants that we are going to choose for each Temp. range before I post a thread for plant suggestions.

1 If no one in Canada wants to get a warm grower, should we not worried about them being available there?

2. What size plants can we suggest? I know that we have always chose compact in the past. Is there anyone in each of the groups not OK with getting a larger plant?
If so let us know and we will keep it small

Let me know what you all want to do. And once we have all the guidelines in place we can start working on plant selections.:lol:

:hello It would be nice to try a bigger plant this time. Maybe with the warm grower. It would give us a lot more choices. Just my :twocents: !

I'm not bothered about staying too compact, but equally I can't really do a large plant.

If it's the sort that can stand on a windowledge/shelf it will be fine for me, but I can't really do something large as such.

How about you warm growers. Can you get a larger plant if chosen?

as long as it isn't too big I can go for that I have a spare room in my house to put it in.

I would like for this project to be a little less strict size wise. I'm not saying to get giant orchids, but allow things that are a bit bigger. I think in past project we would limit it to max 12in tall, spike included. That excluded quite a few somewhat compact plants, because they happened to have tall-ish spikes. So unless a plant has a really long spike we should consider those plants too.

Anyother idea to find plants would be to also use previous project candidate lists as a starting point. We know those were available everywhere at one point, and it would just be a matter of double checking availability.

For the cool and intermediate I would prefer *not* to choose a mini, but if it turns out to become a mini, that's OK for me too. It's only that I prefer a compact, intermediate size of plant.

I agree with Camille, all of my currently flowering 'chids are between 15" and 21" tall including spike and they are still quite compact plants.

I've seem pics on OB of some really large 'chids and I just wouldn't have room for one of them, but if the previous limit has been arround 12" then yes I could go bigger that that.

I also think Camille has a good idea about looking at the past project candidates as a starting point.

Temperatures aren't too much of an issue for me. Intermediate and warm works best in my conditions, but I can make coolish work too. My issue is size. As long as it's compact to small w/o the spike it will be fine. I have an area I can rotate my tall bloomers to when necessary. Large is out of the question for me.
