Phalenopsis black on base and yellowish indent on leaves
6 Attachment(s)
Hi I'm just getting started with orchids but unfortunately now I have a sick Phal. I got it about 2 months ago and it had 3 spikes and two plants. One of the spikes bloomed and then almost immediately dropped all of its blooms. I thougth it was due to a lack of water but since have noticed that the leaves are falling off while they are still green with some black at the base. Today I took both plants out of the pot cut away the dead roots and put peroxide where the black is on the base. On the other plant in the pot, I am now noticing a yellowish indentation in the leaves on the top and underside and something that looks like it might be scale. Can anyone help me identify the problem and tell me if I can save them or if I should destroy them so they don't spread the stuff to my other orchids?

Hi, Sorry about the trouble , the one plant does have crown rot the other looks like brown scale If you have a Lowes in your area the Bayer in the blue bottle works well it says on the label kills bugs for 30 days I don't believe it I would use it weekly for 3 weeks then watch it for awhile longer . There are other sprays if any have oil in them like Neem oil keep the plant out of the sun after using it also keep the plant away from any other plants you have .
The damage on the leaf looks like a mechanical injury and is nothing to worry about . Man I hate to be the bad news person ... sorry . Gin |
Thank you for the feedback. I will go pick up some of the Bayer and see if that helps with the scale. I read on another board that cinnamon or tumeric will help with the crown rot. Has anyone had any experience?

Hi I have used straight peroxcide on rot after it fizzes wick it out as it will revert to water . Cinnamon is good on dings and dents on leaves and would not hurt to use after the peroxcide . Gin
