aerangis citrata
 

i have an aerangis citrata plant and it is forming a spike its about 6 inches long and i thought it was a root.

after looking at photos online, i now see that mine is probably a spike because its brike green, not white.

so how long does it take for buds to form.

the problem is i've been misting it like a root........oops.

i will post a pic soon....i hope it does ok.

Denise, the misting won't hurt and, in fact, may help prevent blasting or drying of the spike. They can take forever to fully develope so don't give up hope. If the terminal end turns black, it may mean blasting. Otherwise it could be 2-3 months or longer.

also i have some black spots on the undersides of the leaves, is this from not enough air flow?

i think there is a root just starting too.

The long green one is a spike. The others are roots. Yes sometimes citrata gets the black spots. I'm sure they are a rsult of fungus, but not much to worry about unless they get out of control. If worried, a spray of Thiomyl will prevent the spots from spreading.

amcoffeegirl, the long growth on your plant is a spike. They can get up to 18" long so give it plenty of room. If you can put it somewhere so the spike will arch out and down it will give you the best display. The other small growths on the base of the plant are new roots.

i must admit i baby some of my orchids but this one i just water and let it fend for itself. funny how that works out.
