I'm sorry, but none of the links go anywhere on my system. Just for your info.

Mahon 01-28-2007 03:13 PM

...I bought a Selaginella species, but it was a fern... didn't know it was a bryophyte :)

Great info... Bryophytes are very interesting (especially when they're on an orchid mount! ;))

Thanks for sharing :D

Selaginella is not a bryophyte. Bryophytes consist of mosses, hornworts and liverworts. Selaginella are of the family Selaginellaceae and are considered to be fern allies. This particular Selaginella is a very nice, very small species. It's not a fast grower but a great plant if you can find it.

Thanks Harry! Thought I was clear on that!??
Ross don't know what to tell you, using IE?
Mahon, thanks for the comments tho see Harry's for clarification on what Selaginella is. I wish I could offer names of the mosses but I do not want to kill any of them just to look at them under a microscope and even then it might not be possible if they are not NA natives! This is really my first journal regarding mosses and I shall be setting up the moss section on my site-hope to add a general sheet soon on what mosses I have growing (or hope they are still growing!!!!)
And Thanks Sue! I really do like MINIS!!!!

So sort of related, I love Selaginella. I'm always looking for species I don;t have. One I used to have but no longer have is S oregana. Does anyone have access to this species?

Tindomul 01-28-2007 08:40 PM

Ooh, nice! I'm gonna have to take a good look in my Saleginella. hehe.

terrestrial_man 01-29-2007 05:42 PM

Harry, I have only seen it offerred once at one of the terrarium suppliers sites (yours??)
Hey Tindo-there are alot of tropical types and some semi-tropical species of Selaginella that will do well in terraria/vivs. Just because it is called a Spike Moss doesn't make it a Bryophyte!!!
They are Lycopsida!! Imagine Spike Lycops! :duh: Weeeull that does not sound cool-so Spike Moss, almost like some Rap artist!!! Imagine: "Doing the Green" by Spike Moss!!!!

Well, yes that was me and I was fortunate enough to get some from a rescue but have not been able to obtain it since. It seems to do well for a while then boom gone.
In case anyone gets any I would love to try again.
