New growth, but what is it?

So the last of the blooms on my Neostylis lou sneary 'Bluebird' finally came off about a week or so ago and then just last night I discovered something new. Actually two something news.

The first is a new leaf growing out the top. Yeah!! I was wondering if it was going to replace the two lowest leaves that turned yellow and fell off a while back. So that's cool, but there is also something nice and green growing at the base of the plant. It doesn't seem like a new root as it is a lot fatter and squat than the other new roots I have seen grow on this plant.

So what do you all think?

Also, should I lower this plant into bark mix some more? It seems like it has grown up and out some since repotting it a while back. Are too many roots exposed here?

Hey Chas!
Looks like a nice big fat root starting :)
I'll let others advise on potting lower - tho if you haven't repotted this plant yet now would be the time to do it.
Your neostylis looks very happy!

Root! How long as it been since you repotted? Media looks a little degraded, but its hard to tell...

I repotted right after I got it. That picture was right after I watered it this morning. It has a lot of charcol in the mix so it's a bit darker. But it is new. The old stuff was really nasty and almost all gone when I bought it.

probably no reason to repot then - I wouldn't worry about the exposed roots so long as they are hydrated - they look good :) if you have trouble keeping them hydrated you could top with a small amount of sphag

I have to spray them every day. Sometimes twice a day to keep them green looking. There is a fan that blows some air across this plant, not a lot, but still, so that is why is drys so quickly. That and the heat in the enclosure. I just made a few venting holes for the enclosure to be able to release some of the heat. yesterday I recorded a high temp of 91.5 degrees F. That's a bit too warm for my taste in this little chamber. So far I have only seen the temp get to 88 degrees F this morning. A bit too high still, but I'm working on it.
