warm, intermediate minis
what are some good intermediate to warm growing minis.
im still somewhat new to orchids to I need something with easy culture. I have a terrarium or just windowsills with lots of warm afternoon light. I thought about laelia lundii but i think it might like to be a little cool growing for my apt. I think minis are really cool and i want to get some. Im really good with brassavolas and phals....I think im killing my angraecums.(water quality may be the issue) and i have one aerangis citrata, in my low light terrarium. it seems happy so far. any other suggestions?????????? thanks. denise. |
My favorite mini is Dendrobium oligophyllum :cloud9:
It's really easy to grow and is just adorable :) |
i was thinking of leptotes bicolor?
is your dend. a true mini?? some people say mini when they mean under 12" i think minis are under 6" or a 6" leaf span... i really manna get some mounted too this is so fun because there are so many choices. |
Try:
1. Stereochilus dalatensis 2. Sarcochilus cecilae 3. Sarcochilus hartmanii 4. Leptotes pohli-tinocoi 5. Pleurothallis corniculata 6. Pleurothallis tribuloides 7. Pleurothallis ornata (syn Pleurothallis scheidei) 8. Stelis argentata 9. any Porroglossum 10. any Platystele 11. larger species of Trichosalpinx 12. any Oberonia |
tolumnia sylvestris

picked up this little one at an orchid show that was here just this weekend.
not too many orchid shows or sales offered here in Des Moines. There is a speakers day coming up soon so that should be fun. the tag reads onc sylvester but upon some research the name has been changed to tolumnia. I never imagined that an onc would have growth habits like this.....i though they all had little pbs. this looks more like neofinetia or vanda type growth.....anyway its very cool. i have room for a couple more....hee hee hee. |

It used to be known as Onc sylvestre. It will keep putting out all those growths continually...this one can easily cover a large or even a shaped mount  Very cool  |
By the way, here's a picture of my Den oligophyllum:
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...gophyllum.html It is a true mini and if you do a search for that plant right here on OB, you'll see a number of us have this little guy...it is a GREAT mini :cloud9: |
Oberonias, Hippeophyllums, and Ornithocepalums are in the Oncidium tribe. They have plant growths that are fan shaped.
I bought a Tolumnia velutina (a mini) that were also fan shaped and grow along a long runner. Psygmorchis grows the same way as well. Apparently this fan shaped growth type is pretty common amongst those in the Oncidium tribe as well as plants belonging to the genus Vanda. |
Den aberrans is really cute, In my minis the easiest growing ones are Leptotes bicolor, and my 3 Neofinetia falcata. Haraella odorata blooms continuously, and would love it in a terrarium.
