summering in the mountains
Can anyone in Upstate New York give me a heads up as to the growing conditions for vandas in the summer months? (June, July, August and September) I want to bring my chids with me to the Adirondacks this summer. Will they be able to be kept outside? Will the acid rain hurt them? I will make sure they are misted regularly and I will be in a sunny spot. Of course I will bring the in when the temps are low. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

After reading your post, I can't get past the imagined looked on my wife's face if I asked "Can I bring my orchids on vacation with us"
I don't live as far upstate as you're going, but I keep most of my plants(paphs, phals & oncidium intergenerics) outside and they seem to love it. The rain is on the acid side(5.7-6.0), not sure how vanda's would react to that. It will also get down to the 30's in mid to late Sept at night. Hope the 'chids enjoy the vacation. Bill |

I don't know anything about acid rain, but I don't see why the vandas shouldn't be able to stay outside. Our summer residence is at an altitude of 2400ft. The days are warm, but some nights are chilly, in the upper 30s sometimes. In that case I bring in the orchids at night as well on the misty cool days. |
